Tribute to John Wilkes from the Compton Martin Players

When John joined the Compton Martin Players he became a magic asset to our performances whether a simple entertainment or ultimately a full blown musical.

Over the many years he accompanied, transposed and adapted music to suit our various abilities! He never seemed to tire of rehearsals and loved the performances.

His very recognisable style was a delight, and the mark of a natural musician. He was also able to turn his hand to comedy and express his feel and timing for a comedy script from time to time. Once, to suit the occasion, when he stood up from the table he was wearing no trousers!

Wherever you might hear John play you always knew that he was doing what he loved, whether coping with the players or adding a certain unusual quality to a church service. Although a staunch Methodist he played regularly for St Michael’s in Compton Martin. No “funeral dirge” tempo for John in the hymns and never any “twiddly bits” as he called them during the communion responses. And many a time themes from “The Slipper and the Rose” could be heard at a church service.

It has been some time since he has been able to play in public, and there will be some who have perhaps never heard him play, but for those of us who do remember, as the saying goes, ‘The Melody Lingers On’.
