The Bell Tower of St Michael’s Church dates from 1520. It reaches 70 feet and is very graceful in its proportions. Since the first part of the 18th century the tower has housed six bells weighing almost 800kg (15cwt). Five of them were cast by the Bilbie family in Chew Stoke. One of the bells bears the inscription:

“My sound is good that once was bad, Let’s sing my sisters and be glad”

Joseph Badman, a blacksmith who lived in the village, cast the 4th bell in the village during the same period. He may have been an apprentice of the Bilbie family and was quite boastful as the inscription cast on the bell says:

“Bilbie come hear and see the sound and shape of me.”
