Moreton effigy

In the north wall is a recess containing the effigy of Thomas de Moreton. This nobleman, we know, held Morton in 1286 and was probably succeeded by his son John in 1293. The effigy is unusual for the period as it represents a civilian (most others being either churchmen or military men). The sword originally went into the mouth of the dog at his feet. Discovered in 1858 beneath the floor of the Bickfield Chapel when the organ was installed it has recently been restored and the Victorian filler and paint removed
