You may think that making a scarecrow is a chore, but if the 2007 Compton Martin Scarecrow Trail is a success and we repeat it, a well made scarecrow can be used again. (Something else to store in the loft!). It is more interesting if people make the scarecrows in different ways: papier mache heads, material heads or mask faces and stuffed with wadding, straw, hay or newspapers. Variety is needed both of subject and type. It is easier to make scarecrows life size to get the proportions right and the clothes to fit. For clothes look at the “Players” surplus list on the village Web Site, your wardrobes or in charity shops.

Here are some instructions used elsewhere that we have tried out.

Materials: You will need bin bags, pieces of wood, cardboard, string, parcel tape, tights, needle and thread or safety pins.

Stuffing: We have a supply of special non flammable wadding. If you would like some now please contact us. Tel 221279.

Body: To make a sturdy scarecrow you will need two pieces of wood fixed together for the upright and one across the shoulders. Make the wood to fit the clothes. A sitting figure needs a piece of wood from the seat to half way up the head .A standing scarecrow will need a piece from the floor. If the figure will be on soft ground allow extra to hammer into the ground. A Christmas tree stand can also be used. Fill a bin liner with stuffing and insert the upright of the frame. Cover cross bar shoulders with padding. Fix the bag over the shoulders with parcel tape. Make a waist with a piece of string. For a male scarecrow the piece of wood can be inside a trouser leg. Ladies with long skirts do not need legs.

Arms: Cut the top off a pair of tights leaving an inch or two of leg. Stuff tights to arm length. Fix the arms at the shoulder with parcel tape.

Neck: To get a firm head that doesn’t keep flopping make a neck by wrapping cardboard or newspaper round the top part of the cross frame and tape securely. If the neck will be bare, thicken with wadding and cover with a piece of tights material.

It is easier to dress the top half at this stage before the head is fixed.

Head: This sounds complicated but it is not and it works. Using the top part of the tights tie a knot in one leg. Put the other leg over the neck wrong side out and tie or stick this to the neck. Lift up the remaining part of the tights and stuff to form a round head. Sew or pin the top to close.

Hair: Use hay, wool, or strips of material unless you have a spare wig. Or put on a scarf or hat. See “The Players” list. Sheep wool makes good eyebrows and beards.

Legs: Stuff a pair of tights up to the crutch. Pull the body of the tights on to the body of the scarecrow. Dress.

Display: Arrange your scarecrow with props. eg table, chair, cricket bat, broomstick.
