Building of the Church probably commenced 1130-1150 and completion of the Chancel was followed by the Norman arcade of the Nave. It was dedicated to St Michael the Archangel, a frequent Norman dedication. The name was chosen, perhaps, as the leader of the angel host against Satan and was intended to be a symbolic representation of the Norman warriors and later Norman rule dominating the Anglo-Saxon inhabitants of Britain. There is no evidence of the previous existence of an Anglo-Saxon church at this site.

Above the ceiling of the Bickfield Chapel there is a void which contains a columbarium or dovecote. This housed 140 “squabs” or pigeons in 1606 for the rector’s table. Access to the columbarium was by a high level outside door which probably had in those times a wooden stairway to it. The wooden door is made of odd planks that are not parallel sided which add charm to this unusual feature.
