It takes some skill to ring the 6 bells of Compton Martin’s Bell Tower. Traditionally this was a job for the elders of the church, but now anyone is welcome to have a go, or just to come along and watch. The bellringers climb a steep winding staircase up to where the bell ropes are. You can even go right up and stand beside the bells while they are being rung - if you’re brave.

Bell ringers practice every Friday night from 7.30-9.00 and then ring the bells for church according to when the services are held. Sometimes they ring to mark special occasions, such as weddings, coronations, jubilees, and the end of military conflicts. The bells are rung in special sequences - you don’t need to be able to read music but you do need to be able to count and keep the beat.

If you would like to become more involved in bell ringing please contact the Tower Captain, Peter Luckett who will give you more details. 01761 221415
