The ancient village of Compton Martin lies in a pleasantly situated vale on a the north-eastern side of the Mendip Hills. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a designated Conservation Area, its hills, woods, far-reaching meadows and water scenery create ever changing features to fascinate the eye.
The village of about 500 people, consists mainly of one street with an associated network of side lanes where many charming houses indicate the changing patterns of domestic architecture. A spring rises near the church feeds the village duck pond and ultimately becomes the River Yeo and, via Blagdon Lake, passes through several villages on its way to the sea at Wick St Lawrence. The history of the village and the 12th century St Michael’s Church is well worth investigating.
Nowadays Compton Martin is renowned for its community activities and family atmosphere. It’s a great place to relax, whether sipping a pint of Butcombe in the Ring O’ Bells, walking up the Coombe, or feeding the ducks on the pond.
